Urgent care for physician marketing—O'Dwyers, 10/10
Healthcare has not proved to be immune to the recession. Many consumers are now deferring voluntary procedures, diminishing physician and hospital revenues. Consumers demonstrate increased price sensitivity and uncertainty generated by healthcare reform. The Stark Law continues to restrict hospitals’ ability to promote physicians, just as the pressures of consumer-driven healthcare mount. As a result, private physician practices are facing a new business reality, and many physicians are recognizing the need for greater visibility for themselves and their practices. —By Victoria L. The American Jewish Committee exhibits the power of community

Client: American Jewish Committee (San Francisco)
PR agency: Harden Communications Partners (Oakland, CA)
Campaign: "The Jews in Modern China" Exhibit
Duration: February to May 2010
Budget: $6,000
The American Jewish Committee of San Francisco partnered with various nonprofits to present "The Jews in Modern China" from February 24 to May 16, 2010. Located at the Officers Club Exhibit Hall at the Presidio in San Francisco, the exhibit showcases the ties between the Jewish and Chinese communities. The PR for the exhibit mirrored that bond.Strategy
Working with Harden Communications Partners, the groups brought together the Jewish and Chinese communities and the general public for the event, says Cynthia Kopec, marketing chair for "The Jews in Modern China."
"We wanted a mix of people going," she explains.
The effort focused on media relations. Patricia Harden, managing partner at Harden, says, "We went deep into the micro-markets of San Francisco."
Tactics
Outreach targeted smaller papers such as the Marina Times and Richmond Review, as well as larger newspapers and radio stations. Harden hosted a media walk-through, featuring Chinese teas and Jewish pastries, and "tried to combine, to the extent we could, the cultural concepts," she adds.
The firm used social media channels, such as Facebook, to promote the exhibit, and had San Franciscans who previously lived in Shanghai serve as spokespeople for the campaign.
Results
Around 8,000 people attended "The Jews in Modern China," which Kopec says was the highest attendance for an exhibit at the Presidio's museum-quality exhibition hall, built in 2001.
Future
There are no future plans for the exhibit to travel elsewhere, but Kopec was "pleased with the results from Harden."

Harden Communications Partners Tapped By "Jews of Modern China" Exhibit
By Staff WriterApril 8, 2010
Harden Communications Partners (www.hardenpartners.com), a full-service public relations boutique agency in the San Francisco Bay Area, announced it was chosen to serve as the agency of record to represent the popular exhibit "The Jews of Modern China."
Co-sponsored by the American Jewish Committee's (AJC) San Francisco office and the Asia Society of Northern California, the exhibit runs from February 24 to May 16, 2010 at the Officers Club Exhibit Hall of the Presidio of San Francisco.
"We selected Harden Partners, based on their expertise and success promoting other Bay Area events such as last year's First International Film Festival on Aging and the grand opening of Covenant House in Oakland," said Cynthia Kopec, who is responsible for marketing the Exhibit.
The exhibit features historic photographs, documents and memorabilia from the 19th and 20th centuries. It is part of the Shanghai Celebration, a year-long San Francisco Bay Area-wide collaboration and its associated exhibitions, films, performances, lectures, and other events.
"This exhibit provides an opportunity to reach out to both the Jewish and Asian communities, as well as the broader public about this untold chapter of history," said Patricia Harden, managing partner of the firm. "We are building awareness of the Exhibit and the exciting story it tells in traditional, ethnic and social media."
"Jews in Modern China" provides a wealth of information that will appeal to the Bay Area's culturally diverse population. Between 1840 and 1949, when Shanghai was an open city that did not require passports to enter, Jewish refugees escaping Iraq, the Russian Revolution, and Nazi persecutions, found sanctuary in China.
